Infusion care provider highlights importance of safe and cost-effective options for immunoglobulin treatment

Dallas, TX – Advanced Infusion Care (AIC), a division of AIS Healthcare, today announced its participation in the Immunoglobulin National Society (IgNS) 12th National Conference, which takes place on October 5th – 8th in Denver, Colorado. The annual conference provides a forum for industry leaders across multiple disciplines to explore major therapy updates, clinical management, standards of practice, and expert workshops.

By providing a team-based approach to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, AIC delivers specialized treatment options to individuals living with immunodeficiencies and other complex conditions. For these patients, IVIG is used to manage various immunodeficiency states and other conditions, including autoimmune, infectious, and other inflammatory ailments. The ultimate goal of this therapy is to normalize a compromised immune system, fight infections, and have patients receive care in the comfort of their own homes.

This year at IgNS, AIC representatives will present their analysis of policy changes to reduce the overall infusion escalation time for patients with a 10% intravenous immunoglobulin product.

“At AIC, we are constantly innovating to ensure that our infusion care services best meet the needs of our patients. The Immunoglobulin National Society’s annual conference is an important venue for AIC and other leaders to come together to advance our industry, share best practices, and deliver the best possible care for patients,” said Jud Hall, President at AIC

The specialty pharmacy provider traditionally follows a policy of increasing IVIG infusion rates every 30 minutes. To accommodate patient preferences and changing healthcare reimbursement practices, AIC reevaluated this infusion policy to explore the possibility of reducing the overall infusion time per patient and identify more cost-effective and safe options for IVIG administration.

AIC’s retrospective review of some patient records over a six-month period showed that 11 of the 13 observed patients reported no adverse experiences with two patients reporting adverse experiences across 70 infusions (2.9% incidence). Patients also reported satisfaction with the new shorter infusion rate of 15 minutes for 68 out of the 70 infusions. The analysis also saw a mean reduction of 41.7 minutes (23.9% per visit) in IVIG infusion time with the transition to the 15-minute escalation protocol leading to a reduction in the per visit cost of nursing services.

On Saturday, October 7th, AIC will present their findings to IgNS attendees during a poster board session, where experts will demonstrate how a reduction in infusion time could positively impact nursing costs, patient quality of life, and infusion-related adverse event occurrence. AIC’s analysis indicates the change in policy resulted in well-tolerated and shorter infusion times which may have a positive impact on patient quality of life and healthcare resource utilization.

AIC is dually accredited by URAC and the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), further distinguishing itself as an infusion services provider. AIC is also a member of IgNS and is regularly inspected by national and state boards of pharmacy.

In recent months, AIC announced the grand reopening of a newly designed pharmacy in Valdosta, Georgia. AIC also made medications like GAMMAKED™ and LEQEMBI™ available to patients through its locations in Valdosta, Georgia; Birmingham, Alabama; Clinton, Mississippi; Panama City, Florida; and Dallas, Texas.

Dallas, Texas – AIS Healthcare, a leading provider of targeted drug delivery (TDD) and infusion care solutions, announced its participation in the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP) 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo, which took place on September 18th – 21st in Grapevine, Texas. At the NASP 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo, AIS Healthcare sponsored a continuing education symposium through an unrestricted educational grant that focused on the critical topic of USP 797 guideline revisions, a set of standards developed by U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) governing the safe compounding of sterile preparations in healthcare settings, and its impact on the healthcare industry. These topics were discussed during panel discussions with industry experts and led by Katrina K. Harper, Director of Clinical Education, AIS Healthcare.

AIS Healthcare’s symposium, The 411 Before 911 on USP 797: Changes, Challenges, and Choices, featured speakers including:

AIS Healthcare is dedicated to advancing best practices across the specialty pharmacy industry. The NASP Annual Meeting and Expo served as a crucial platform for industry leaders to come together to promote the highest standards of sterility, quality, and safety in the development of compounded medications.

“Advancing quality and improving lives is at the center of what this event is about. The NASP 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo provided an important setting for experts within our industry to engage and learn from one another with the goal of best serving our patients’ unique needs. We were proud to facilitate important discussions about how we prioritize sterility, quality, and safety in all the medications we produce for patients,” said Simon Castellanos, CEO of AIS Healthcare.

USP 797 revisions become official and enforceable on November 1, 2023. Pharmacies preparing Category 3 compounded sterile preparations (CSPs), formerly known as high-risk preparations, now face more rigorous standards. These revisions will require increased staffing, training, and investment, all of which may pose challenges for pharmacies. AIS Healthcare is already meeting or exceeding these revised standards.

AIS Healthcare is honored to have participated in the NASP 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo and is committed to fostering innovation and excellence in pharmaceutical compounding. For more information about the NASP 2023 Annual Meeting and Expo, please visit www.naspmeeting.com

Case study highlights Advanced Infusion Care and AIS Healthcare’s commitment to patients and quality of care

Dallas, TX – Advanced Infusion Care (AIC), a division of AIS Healthcare, today announced a recent feature in the National Home Infusion Association’s (NHIA) Infusion Journal. The case study in NHIJ, coauthored by Amy Mulgrew (RN, CRNI, IgCN, VA-BC), Erin Mullis (RN, IgCN), and Ashley McKenna (RN, IgCN) details the experience of an AIC patient diagnosed with chronic variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and underscores the importance of considering patient preference when choosing the optimal immune globulin (Ig) therapy approach.

“Patients living with primary immunodeficiency (PI) deserve individualized treatment options that maximize patient health and quality of life. Our case study highlighted in the NHIJ is a prime example of prioritizing patient-specific needs while also heeding patient choice,” said Amy Mulgrew, National Manager of Clinical Education at Advanced Infusion Care

For patients with PI and CVID, rare genetic disorders that impair the immune system, Ig is a lifelong therapy that enables patients to fight infections, stay healthy, and receive care in the comfort of their own homes. In the case study, the AIC patient began intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy and transitioned to subcutaneous immune globulin (SCIg) therapy before transitioning back to IVIg for quality-of-life reasons and personal preferences.

Both IVIg and SCIg are clinically proven effective treatments for PI, and they each offer certain advantages and disadvantages. That is why it is important to assess the patient’s unique circumstances to help guide decisions for intravenous or subcutaneous treatment. Ig therapy must be individualized to meet each patient’s specific clinical needs as well as their personal preferences.

The AIC patient cited in the case study underwent treatment from 2015-2020, with monthly IVIg infusions generally well tolerated. The patient experienced mild to moderate adverse drug reactions (ADRs), described as fatigue and lethargy, and then in 2020 requested a transition to SCIg to determine if that route of administration could effectively treat his CVID without the ADRs experienced using IVIg. In late 2021, the patient noted numerous ADRs from his weekly SCIg infusions and stated he felt better on the monthly infusion of IVIg.

Since transitioning back from SCIg to IVIg, the patient remained stable and has had no reported ADRs. AIC nurses have visited him and noted that the patient’s quality of life has improved. In this instance, AIC was able to accommodate the patient’s preference and that helped lead to improved patient satisfaction.

“Clinicians and care providers can better serve patients if Ig care is individualized. This patient case study highlights the importance of recognizing patient preference when choosing the route of administration for Ig therapy,” added Mulgrew.

The Infusion Journal is a peer reviewed, scholarly publication that features independent original research and studies on the effects of infusion therapies related to patient outcomes, medication safety, economic analyses, drug stability studies, case studies, and evaluations of innovative clinical services.

The full AIC case study in the Infusion Journal is available here.
